Look how far the Republican Party has descended since Reagan’s 1964 speech

Posted by Michael Lawrence on August 11, 2008

This Reagan speech is worth a listen. In many ways it is thoroughly invigorating. I have cooled over the years to many of the policies that Reagan enacted as president, but if most of the ideals in this speech could once again be brought into the foreground of political discussion, we would be much better off. Not perfect, but better off.

I sent this video once to a neocon friend, who had a rash for days afterward. He explained all this by saying that this particular event was a product of Reagan’s “youth.” Reagan was 53 at the time. My interlocutor was 24. Yeah, youth.

Reagan was, for me, a little too militaristic, and yet he never fired a shot at the USSR. Instead, he met with Gorbechev and said, “Let me tell you why we don’t trust you.” That’s diplomacy. Good, honest diplomacy. It’s not the prissy stuff that the Bush Administration makes it out to be.

Anyway, here ya go:

An American Citizen Shares the Horrors in Georgia

Posted by Michael Lawrence on August 11, 2008

There is a very lively and interesting discussion on the Philadelphia Ron Paul/Freedom Force meetup groups about this situation. One person had some very good comments that had my doubting a bit the involvement of the U.S. in this mess, but then I saw this video. I hope the Amerikan military is proud of itself for transporting more Georgian troops into the region so that the killing of innocents can be ramped up.

Fair is Foul and Foul is Fair

Posted by Michael Lawrence on August 11, 2008

Justin Raimondo undoes the lies of the Bush Administration and the mainstream news media with this piece.

One is tempted to place most of the blame on Bush, McCain, and Obama for telling egregious lies about this situation in Georgia, but perhaps the fact that the politicians can get away with murder like this is the result of an uninformed, if not illiterate, citizenry.

The Ice Cream Diet

Posted by Michael Lawrence on August 11, 2008

About two weeks ago I tipped the scales at a particularly infuriating milestone. I was well on my way to erasing a good run of weight loss that I had a few years ago. I’ve been running for awhile now, but I was not doing enough in the food department. This called for new drastic measures, so about a week ago I turned up the intensity.

Here’s what I do. I allow myself 1500 calories, which is the amount a man of my height should be taking in each day. Then I run, which usually burns about 450 calories. With the net calorie total now below the requisite 1500, I eat ice cream–a reasonable amount, that is.  With this strategy I have lost at least three pounds in one week, which is really remarkable.  And it’s not water weight:  I took that off the week before.

“The best part about getting shot in the buttocks,” said Forrest Gump, “is the ice cream.” That’s right. Ice cream is wonderful. What’s more is that it has helped me to lose weight on a number of occasions. Without it, my weight often stagnates. With it, the pounds drop like flies. I suppose this is more psychological than anything else. After maniacally watching calories all day, the ice cream acts as a reward, and as a source of something that actually tastes good.

Next time you need to lose weight, eat ice cream, and be sure to brag about this to all your Weight Watchers friends.
